GOODWOOD PREVIEW: PROMISING LEAD, ante-post favourite for the Blue Square Nassau Stakes at Goodwood on Saturday, has suffered a setback and will miss the race.
Michael Stoute's four-year-old, an impressive winner of the Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh on her last start, had been as low as 5 to 2 for the Group One event.
But she injured a knee in a routine piece of work on Saturday morning and will play no part at the weekend.
Promising Lead will instead be aimed at the Yorkshire Oaks - already the target for the likes of Look Here, Moonstone and Michita.
"She just tweaked a knee after she worked so well on Saturday," said Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Prince Khalid Abdullah. "It doesn't look like it will keep her out for long, or that it is anything serious, but there is a little bit of heat there.
"We have decided not to risk her and she will go straight to York for the Yorkshire Oaks now.
"We hope Passage Of Time is a useful substitute and she showed last time that she is still capable."
James Fanshawe's Spacious and the Dermot Weld-trained Chinese White are other notable absentees from the Nassau, which has attracted 15 confirmations.
Jim Bolger's Lush Lashes is set to return to 10 furlongs after her success in the Coronation Stakes, while Aidan O'Brien has his usual strong squad.
SAEED BIN Suroor insists Il Warrd will be in his element over the Betfair Cup trip at Glorious Goodwood today.
The Godolphin team have in the past won the Group Two contest, registered as the Lennox Stakes, with Byron (2004) and Iffraaj (2006).
Il Warrd this year represents Sheikh Mohammed's operation, having previously performed with credit at Royal Ascot.
The three-year-old colt finished second to Aqlaam in the Jersey Stakes on his return to seven furlongs and again tries his luck over the same distance in Sussex.
"Il Warrd worked well on Friday and is a tough horse that really tries his best," reflected Bin Suroor. "This seven furlongs suits him well and he's ready to take his chance in a Group Two."
Infallible, runner-up in the Coronation Stakes and Falmouth Stakes, takes on colts for the first time. "She's wonderfully consistent and she's done nothing wrong. We are dropping her back in trip so we'll see how we go," said Chris Richardson, managing director for owners the Cheveley Park Stud. "We'll see how the ground is but hopefully it's the first day of the meeting and it won't be too quick.
"There is some rain forecast, which would be a help."
Her trainer, John Gosden, also runs the seasoned campaigner Racer Forever, winner of the Group Three Criterion Stakes last month and back in Pattern company after finishing seventh in the Bunbury Cup.
"We felt he'd be better off in a weight-for-age race rather than carry top weight in handicaps," said Gosden's racing secretary, Peter Shoemark. "He won the Criterion and ran seventh in the Bunbury Cup and we feel seven furlongs at Goodwood should suit him."
Meanwhile, dual 2,000 Guineas winner Henrythenavigator heads a seven-strong field for the BGC Sussex Stakes at Goodwood tomorrow. Aidan O'Brien's brilliant colt, who won the St James's Palace Stakes on his latest start, will be accompanied to post by his stablemate Windsor Palace.
The John Gosden-trained Raven's Pass, who ran Henrythenavigator to three-quarters of a length at Royal Ascot, will again do battle.
Peter Chapple-Hyam is double-handed with Tariq and Winker Watson, while Major Cadeaux from Richard Hannon's stable and the Andrew Balding-trained Dream Eater complete the line-up.
Dream Eater has a bit to find on Henrythenavigator after finishing fifth behind him in the Newmarket 2,000 Guineas, after which he finished third to Aqlaam in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Now Balding hopes Dream Eater can step up to the mark in what is a tough test.
"He's run two very solid races this year but obviously he'd have to step up on that to give the principals a run for their money," said the Kingsclere trainer.
"He's in good nick and we're very happy with him."
Ladbrokes, meanwhile, make Zarkava their new 7 to 2 favourite for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe as Montmartre is not a definite starter in the Longchamp showpiece.
The three-year-old grey had been all the rage for the Arc and was as low as 5 to 2 following his scintillating victory in the Grand Prix de Paris.
However, the Alain de Royer-Dupre-trained colt returned stiff from his Longchamp run and may not make the line-up.
De Royer-Dupre still houses the new favourite for the race in his unbeaten filly Zarkava.
Next in the list is Ballydoyle raider Soldier Of Fortune, who is being prepared with an autumn campaign in mind.
Despite proving his stamina over 12 furlongs in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at the weekend, Ladbrokes do not quote Duke Of Marmalade in their betting for the Arc on October 5th.
