Evian Masters draws top field

WOMEN:World number one Lorena Ochoa of Mexico, number two Annika Sorenstam and recent Irish Open champion Suzann Pettersen of Norway, the number three, all are in France for the Evian Masters this week.

They join number four Paula Creamer of the US, who won the event in 2005, recent rookie major winner Yani Tseng of Taiwan, who is fifth in the world, and defending champion Natalie Gulbis of the US.

This week's 90-woman field also features money list leader Gwladys Nocera from France, who is competing on home turf for the first time this season.

In addition to next week's Women's British Open, the Evian Masters is one of two designated majors on the Ladies European Tour. The increased purse of €2.06 million matches the US Open as the highest purse in women's golf.

None of Ireland's professionals are competing.

Murphy happy back in Moscow

EUROPEAN TOUR:Ireland's Gary Murphy, who finished in a tie for fifth last year at the Le Meridien Moscow Country Club, is glad to be back for this week's Russian Open.

"I really enjoy this golf course and the place," Murphy said. "It's a fun week, a relaxed atmosphere, everybody is staying on site and it's all very laid back, which kind of suits me really. I have had some good success here - five out of seven top-10. I just enjoy the course.

"This tournament has gone from having a €100,000 prize fund to having one of €2 million, and the people here are very positive and hopefully the support from the players continues to improve."

Murphy is joined in the field by David Higgins. Live coverage begins at 9am on Sky Sports 1.

Leinster need a half for title

AMATEUR:Having scored a comfortable win over Connacht on day one of the Youths Interprovincial Championship at Cork Golf Club, Leinster followed up with a five-and-a-half matches to three-and-a-half win over the host province on day two to set up a title decider against Ulster today when a half will be enough to see Leinster capture their fifth consecutive title.

In the Boys Championship, also at Cork GC, Ulster hold the upper hand. Having first scored a 8-1 win over Connacht, they edged out Leinster thanks in no small part to a foursomes whitewash.
