Gunning for her seventh victory this season and her first Evian Masters, she said: "I'm just glad I'm at the top, you know.

"I had a slow start. I made birdie on the first hole and didn't give myself a lot of birdie chances."

South Korea's Sun Ju Ahn, Brazilian Angela Park and Taiwan's Candie Kung shared second on six-under-par 66, one shot behind the leader.

Ahn competes on the Korean LPGA Tour, where she has won four tournaments, and she finished joint sixth alongside Annika Sorenstam in the tournament last year.

"Today the putting was good and I hit some great iron shots," said the 21-year-old from Seoul. "This course is very long with wide fairways, which is good. I like long courses."

Kung has won three times on the US LPGA Tour, while Park is yet to win as a professional.

Norway's Suzann Pettersen, the recent winner of the Irish Open, South Korea's Meena Lee and the US trio of Laura Diaz, Angela Stanford and Juli Inkster, who won the event in 2003, finished tied for fifth place on 67.

US TOUR:Former US Masters champion and local hero Mike Weir fired a six-under-par 65 to grab a share of the clubhouse lead in the Canadian Open.

He joined Americans Eric Axley and hot-shot Anthony Kim at the top of the leaderboard at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Ontario.

CHALLENGE TOUR:Joint leaders Matthew Cort of England and Sweden's Björn Pettersson, who picked up two shots in his last three holes, were the only men to break 70 on day one of the Wales Challenge.

Michael McGeady shot 71, while Gareth Maybin and Mark Murphy were two over after 74s. Colm Moriarty shot a three-over 75, and Michael Hoey and Gareth Shaw were four over.

EUROPRO TOUR:Ireland will be well represented on the final day of the Oceanico Algarve Championship in Vilamoura.

Allan Murray is just two shots off the pace set by the Portuguese pair of Ricardo Santos and Antonio Sobrinho on 10-under-par 133. Overnight leader Richard Kilpatrick from Banbridge shot a one-under 71 to move to seven under, where he is joined by Order of Merit leader Noel Fox, who shot 70.

AMATEUR:Leinster tied with Ulster to clinch a record-equalling fifth consecutive title in the Youths Interprovincial Championship at Cork Golf Club.

Ulster needed to win the match outright to capture the championship, and their chances looked favourable when the match was honours even with one game left on the course. James Patterson (Royal Portrush) was one up on Brendan Walton (The Island) playing the eighth hole, their 17th, but Walton won the hole to level the match and the pendulum swung in Leinster's favour.

Walton's tee-shot to 10 feet on the par three ninth decided matters - the hole was halved in threes and with that Leinster matched Ulster's (1985-1989) feat of five consecutive titles.

In the Boys Interprovincials, also at Cork, Ulster tied with Munster 4½-4½ to capture the championship.

The match was set at four games apiece with Munster's Séamus King one up over Seán Morrison on the 18th tee. An errant tee-shot lead to King losing the hole and Ulster retaining the title by the narrowest of margins.

YOUNG MASTERS:Lisa Maguire is just two shots behind defending champion Carly Booth from Scotland after the first round of the Young Masters Tournament in Chantilly, France.

Booth shot a one-over-par 72 to lead by one from Anna Arrese from Spain, with Maguire sharing third place after a 74. Leona Maguire shot 78 while Chris Selfridge carded a 79 and Paul Dunne an 81.
