While both these sides failed to make an impression in the first round of Section B of the Leinster Schools Junior Cup recently, the Section A final at Donnybrook yesterday was the area they felt comfortable in, and it was Gorey who prevailed.
Gorey were gifted an early booster when St David's opted to run out of defence. Denis Tomkins made an interception and enjoyed a clear run to the posts. Out-half Lyndon Jones added the points and also kicked a third-minute penalty.
St David's hit back as scrumhalf Ross McKeown put flanker Karl Byrne away on the short side and he found winger Karl Murray with a try-scoring pass. At 10-5 after only six minutes, the game had all the look of a high scoring encounter.
It was a credit to the defences that it didn't turn out that way. Gorey fended off all attempts at further reducing their lead and Jones kicked a 21st minute penalty to put victory in sight.
