While Bo Johansson was attempting to bolster the confidence of his Danish players yesterday following their defeat by France on Sunday, Dutch boss Frank Rijkaard launched a blistering attack on his side ahead of their game in Rotterdam this evening.
"I've been very disappointed with their attitude, approach and lack of enthusiasm," he told journalists yesterday. "While other sides, even those that have lost their opening games have amazed me with their determination, my players prefer to play cards, taking little interest in what is going on in the rest of the tournament."
Rijkaard's frustration stems from his side's inability to kill off the Czechs in their opening match, one they were extremely fortunate to win, but the Dutch coach will stick with at least nine of the same men when he announces his side today. Definitely out is Jaap Stam who picked up a groin injury at the weekend - he will be replaced by Bert Konterman. Clarence Seedorf's place on the right side of midfield must be under threat after Rijkaard's admission that he had talked to the player about how poorly he played in the opener.
Johansson has a few minor injury worries with Thomas Helveg, Jess Hogh and Martin Jorgensen all carrying knocks. Given that only Jorgensen's groin strain is considered serious enough to threaten his place in the starting line-up, it could be worse for the Danes ahead of a game which they badly need to win.
