GOAL Challenge: Tyrone followed up their All-Ireland triumph with another win last night when they defeated a Carrickmore selection in the GOAL challenge at Omagh's Healy Park.

A crowd of 5,000 turned up to see Tyrone make their final appearance of the season, and gave retiring players Peter Canavan and Chris Lawn a standing ovation.

Carrickmore, who had former Tyrone stars Fay Devlin, Mickey Bradley and Ciarán McBride making guest appearances, shocked the Sam Maguire Cup holders with two early goals, but it was the All-Ireland champions who ran out easy winners.

Manager Mickey Harte made a second-half appearance as a sub and bagged five goals.

Peter Donnelly, Ryan McMenamin, Conor Gormley, Seán Cavanagh, Peter Canavan, Ryan Mellon and Eoghan Bradley also hit the net.

It was only when Brian Quinn, managing director of Tyrone sponsors Rocwell Water, pledged £100 (€147) per goal that the rush began, landing the GOAL charity an extra £2,200 (€3,200).

The turnout delighted county chairman Pat Darcy. "It provides a great opportunity for the supporters to come out and see the All-Ireland champions play," he said.

"It's great to seen them strolling in there in their hundreds, and after all the celebrations of the weekend, it's good to see them out in force again."

But he urged the GOAL charity and the GAA to get together and make the annual event even more successful.

"I think it could be made even better if more thought was put into it," said Darcy.

"For example, one of the losing All-Ireland semi-finalists could be invited to play, and you might get a bigger crowd, and therefore the charity would do even better.

"It's something that maybe GOAL and the GAA need to sit down and talk about, because there was difficulty in getting another county to play Tyrone today.

"That really shouldn't happen, because it is a very worthwhile charity."
