Neil Callan was seen to great effect when driving Hibernate to victory in the £12,000 Wimpey Homes Edinburgh Gold Cup yesterday, the richest race ever staged in Musselburgh's 183 year history.
The apprentice, who had his allowance cut to 3lb recently, made every yard of the running on Karl Burke's five-year-old who beat 40 to 1 bottom weight Ludere by a short head.
It was five lengths back to third home Fatehalkhair, the well supported 7 to 2 favourite, in a race where not many of the 16 runners managed to get in a blow.
