CATTERICK'S most valuable race of the year, the Richmond Conditions Stakes, has proved to be a stepping stone for some smart performers in recent years, with the likes of White Muzzle and Moonax winning here before going onto greater things.
Now owner breeder George Hicks is dreaming of Derby glory after his Prince Of My Heart took yesterday's renewal in impressive fashion. Frankie Dettori set the pace on the heavily backed House of Riches but was soon in trouble as Prince Of My Heart took up the running five out, dropping away lamely and being virtually pulled up entering the straight.
Michael Hills only had to shake the reins as the winner quickened 10 lengths clear of Reinhardt over two furlongs out and eventually won easing down by six lengths from Swan Hunter. "Since I was a kid I always dreamed of having a winner and now I may have a runner in the Derby," smiled the winning owner.
Barry Hills has outlined three possible races for Prince Of My Heart, the Chester Vase, Lingfield Derby Trial or a York one mile, six furlong conditions race.
