Michael Hoey eased his way through to the last 32 of the British Amateur Championship but it took six extra holes to see off Sweden's Niklas Bruzelius at Prestwick yesterday.
The Shandon Park player will be joined in the third round by Limerick's Tim Rice and Ballyclare's Gareth Maybin. Rice was a comfortable 4 and 3 winner over Jonathan Evans (Guilford) while Maybin beat David Inglis on the 18th.
However, Irish champion Graeme McDowell and former Walker Cup player Jody Fanagan went out at the first hurdle. McDowell lost on the last green to Paul Bradshaw while Fanagan was beaten on the 16th by Jonathan King. Stuart Davis grabbed the headlines after sending favourite Nick Dougherty spinning out of the tournament. The 27-year-old edged out Nick Faldo's young protege at the 20th hole after a well contested tussle.
