Connacht Senior CupReigning champions Garbally College were sent crashing out when they were overpowered by St Joseph's 27-0 in the quarter-final at Dangan yesterday.
The Galway city side were on top throughout as outhalf Tadgh Leader edged them in front with two penalties and then converted the opening try from fullback Niall Conroy.
The champions needed a good start to the second half to get back into the contest. But it was St Joseph's who increased their lead after 52 minutes when flanker Paul Connolly crossed.
They finished in style with Conroy getting his second try of the game in the closing minutes. Leader added both conversions.
Three tries from team captain Adam Kennedy drove Marist College to an emphatic 33-3 victory over Clifden CS at Athlone.
Marist always looked in control, with two tries and a conversion from Kennedy putting them 12-0 ahead by the 18th minute. Hooker David Burns, Kennedy and number eight Brendan Fagan crossed for second-half tries and Kennedy slotted four of the five conversions. Clifden's only reply came from a penalty by outhalf Jack Vaughan. Marist now meet St Joseph's in the semi-finals.
Keith Farry's penalty goals, one in each half, helped Sligo GS to a hard-earned 13-7 win over a battling Summerhill College side at the college's own grounds.
Grammar made the breakthrough after 10 minutes when David Butler ran in for a try following a splendid four-man move. Farry was on target with the conversion.
Summerhill captain Conor Brady was involved in some promising College moves but the home side were reduced to 14 players in the 27th minute when Tom Callaghan was sinbinned.
Summerhill were back in the match in the 34th minute when Aaron Spring got in for a try which Niall Kenneally converted.
Grammar led 10-7 at the interval after Farry converted a penalty goal, seconds before the half-time whistle. Farry put Grammar further ahead with another penalty goal early in the second half and that completed the scoring.
