Hull City, second from bottom of the third division, overcame a difference of 80 league positions to knock Crystal Palace out of the English League Cup at Selhurst Park last night.
Mark Hateley's side, who shocked the Premiership side 1-0 in the first leg, booked a trip to Newcastle after a battling performance. Hull gave themselves a two-goal cushion on 30 minutes with a goal from Ian Wright but in the second half, Carl Veart and substitute George Ndah scored to take the tie into extra-time, as Palace started to show their class.
However, they failed to score in the additional half-hour, as Hull hung on grimly to go through on the away goals rule with the tie level at 2-2.
Another third division side, Leyton Orient, also covered themselves with glory, despite exiting the competition, drawing 4-4 with Bolton at the Reebok Stadium.
Orient trailed 3-1 from the first leg but led three times last night. Each time they went ahead, however, Bolton pegged them back and indeed took the lead for the first time on the night with two goals in as many minutes midway through the second half. But Orient didn't give up and Mark Warren scored in the last minute to cut Bolton's aggregate winning margin to 7-5.
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink turned from hero to villain, as Leeds clung on for a 4-3 aggregate triumph at Bristol City despite losing 2-1 on the night.
Dutch striker Hasselbaink gave Leeds a comfortable 4-1 advantage, having won the first match 3-1 at Elland Road, when he opened the scoring after eight minutes. But he was sent off on the half-hour mark following an off-the-ball incident with Brian Tinnion, and City bounced back with goals from Greg Goodridge and Shaun Taylor to keep the pressure on the visitors right up to the final whistle.
Goals by David Ginola - from the penalty spot - and Chris Armstrong at Carlisle ensured Tottenham will meet either Derby or Southend in the third round. Tottenham went into the return leg with a 3-2 advantage and were never in danger of an upset.
Premiership strugglers Barnsley gained a much-needed confidence boost with a 4-1 victory over Chesterfield for a 6-2 aggregate success. Barnsley now entertain the only side below them in the Premiership table - Southampton, who went through 5-1 on aggregate against Brentford.
