Scotland have problems for tomorrow's final warm-up game against the United States in Washington that could cause Craig Brown to abandon hope of staging a dress rehearsal for the World Cup opener against Brazil on Wednesday week.
Three midfield players - John Collins of Monaco, Craig Burley of Celtic and Blackburn's Billy McKinlay - as well as the Rangers striker, Gordon Durie, are all receiving treatment for various injuries.
Of the quartet, Durie's hamstring is the most serious and, on their arrival in the American capital yesterday, Brown considered that he should be regarded as a serious doubt.
Durie sustained the injury during last Saturday's 2-2 draw with Colombia in New Jersey and had hoped to have recovered in time for tomorrow's game. However, there is no danger to his prospects of being ready for the World Cup itself.
Burley has been troubled by a calf problem , which stems from sciatica. It has bothered him intermittently over the last two years, but he insists that it takes only a day or two to clear.
Collins is suffering from a toe he damaged two months ago, chipping a bone just before his club met Manchester United in the European Cup quarter finals. He has been receiving treatment, including water-jogging. McKinlay, who came off the field against Colombia with blistered feet, discovered yesterday that one of them is septic. He could, however, be ready after antibiotic treatment. "It is not ideal," said Brown, "But, thankfully, none of them is serious enough to affect their chances of playing in the World Cup itself. We will see how they are tomorrow."
