All three Italian clubs were knocked out of the UEFA Cup last night, leaving Serie A without a team in the last eight of the competition. By contrast, all four Spanish sides survived to set up two all-Spanish quarter-finals: Alaves v Rayo Vallecano and former European champions Barcelona v Celta Vigo.
The two other matches in the last eight will be between Porto and Liverpool, while Kaiserslautern will meet PSV Eindhoven. The first legs will be on March 8th and the return games on March 15th.
Inter Milan, AS Roma and Parma were all eliminated with Inter victims of the biggest shock of all in a match marred by crowd trouble. They crashed 2-0 at home to unfancied Spanish side Alaves, who went through 5-3 on aggregate after a 3-3 draw in Spain last week.
Former Manchester United winger Jordi Cruyff and Ivan Tomic both scored in the last 12 minutes to secure victory for Alaves. Parma completed the unhappy trilogy despite a 3-2 second leg win over PSV Eindhoven. The Dutch champions, who won the first leg 2-1 at home last week, went through on the away goals rule after the sides finished 4-4 on aggregate.
Spain's Barcelona hammered AEK Athens 5-0 for a 6-0 aggregate victory; Vallecano's 2-1 win at Bordeaux wrapped up their 62 aggregate success, while Celta Vigo left it late to beat VfB Stuttgart 2-1 after drawing 0-0 in Germany last week. Kaiserslautern kept the German flag flying with a narrow 10 win over Slavia Prague which gave them a 1-0 aggregate victory.
Though a bad night for Italy, it was no better for France.
With Bordeaux going out to Vallecano, Nantes were also eliminated despite a 2-1 home win over Porto. Porto went through 4-3 on aggregate.
