Lansdowne won the All-Ireland under-20 championship with a hard-earned victory over Ulster side Rainey at Corinthian Park, Galway.
Lansdowne led 14-10 at half-time, but it took a 71st minute intercept try before the captain Nigel Geraghty could claim the Fraser McMullen Trophy. Rainey were rewarded with an early try by wing Nigel Sheeny, but Lansdowne, despite playing against the wind, eventually seized the lead through a well-worked try by full back Robert Dolan. A try by scrum-half McMahon put Rainey back in the reckoning in the second half, but The killer blow came when Lansdowne centre Richie Rennicks stole the ball as Rainey tried to clear their lines from inside their own 22. Scrum-half Becker's conversion and an 80th minute penalty sealed the win.
