An opening point by Damian Roberts, followed by goals from John Kavanagh and Des Murphy, all scored in the opening six minutes of Saturday's All-Ireland IHC quarter-final in Tullamore got Carlow off to the best possible start against Westmeath. They were never subsequently headed and went on to lead at half-time by 2-4 to 0-5, running out 2-10 to 1-10 winners. Westmeath tried hard to get back into the game, but their forwards wasted too many scoring chances and it was Carlow who deservedly went on to qualify for the semi-final.
Carlow are joined in the last four by Kildare, Laois and Wicklow.
