Ireland Captain
Anthony Tohill (Swatragh and Derry).
Age: 29. Height: 6ft 4in. Weight: 15st.
Previous appearances: 1998, '99, 00 (vice-captain).
No great surprise at Tohill's elevation to the captaincy. A gifted minor on Derry's 1989 All-Ireland-winning side, he has gone on to become one of the best centrefielders in football. Currently back to very good form after early-season injury, he brings extensive experience (he played 18 months as an underage Australian Rules player on the books of Melbourne) as well as his talents to bear on the task. Just as significant is his track record in International Rules at which he has been one of Ireland's best and most consistent players, capable of winning ball around the middle or slotting in at full forward.
"It's a great honour to be asked to captain your country. I'm delighted and we will be doing all we can to ensure the pride of the Irish team will be restored."
