Golf/Boys' and Girls' championships: Ireland produced an amazing recovery to send host nation Wales tumbling to defeat at Royal St David's, Harlech yesterday in the Boys' Home International Championship.
They looked dead and buried in mid-afternoon when trailing in six of the ten singles and up in just two with the others level - but then there was an remarkable about turn in fortunes.
Whereas the board had been a blaze of red, it turned green as slowly but surely, particularly in the lower order the Irish teenagers got on top.
Pride of place went to the experienced Dubliner David Rawluk who came from behind to overhaul Rhys Davies, who had reached the final of the Welsh Amateur Championship only last week.
Rawluk spurted to a 3 and 2 success and was followed by Michael Mulryan and Nicholas Grant to seal the Irish triumph after there had been wins at the head of the order by Arron O'Callaghan, Cian McNamara and Ciaran McAleavey.
Meanwhile, also in Wales at Newport, Carlow teenager Tara Delaney put herself into a strong position to qualify for the knock-out stages of the Girls' British Open Amateur Championship with a splendid 73 in the first stroke-play round on a day when thunderstorms caused two interruptions to play.
