Irish in Britain: How they fared this weekend

And there we were, up on our high horse, giving out about all this player and manager poaching that's been going on in football . . . and now we've been caught out doing the very same thing.

Well, you can't blame us for trying. Bournemouth's goalscoring midfielder Steve Robinson might have been a handy option for Mick McCarthy in the months ahead, and he was born in Crumlin. Crumlin in Belfast, though, and our `Irish in Britain' list only includes those who have opted for the Republic of Ireland. And Steve's already been capped at B level for Northern Ireland, so that's that. A slap on the wrist for those of us who go around singing `there's only one Crumlin'. Knuckles rapped, blushes all 'round and apologies to Lawrie McMenemy. We think we're safe enough with Dominic Foley because he was born in Cork, although some would say Cork . . .no, we won't go in to that. Anyway, it mightn't have been such a good week for Foley's club Wolves (drew and lost their two league games), but at least the former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international made his first appearance of the season, coming on as a sub against Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday night and scoring in a 2-1 defeat. A good week too for former Shamrock Rovers' striker Stephen Grant, who also got his first run-out of the new campaign, coming on as a 68th minute sub for Stockport County in their 3-2 win away to Swindon. There were also first appearances of the season this week for Blackburn's Damien Johnsen, who was a sub against Lyons in the UEFA Cup and West Ham on Saturday, and Leeds United's Stephen McPhail (a sub against Leicester at Elland Road).
