GOLF:THE PGA European Tour could decide to look to an east coast links course to play host to the Irish Open on May 14th-17th next, after Mount Juliet yesterday issued a statement that it had "reluctantly come to the decision that it is not feasible for it to host the tournament" after a detailed assessment of the factors involved in running the tournament at that time of year.

With a new title sponsor - 3, the international telecommunications company - due to be announced next week, the search for a host course is likely to centre on those which have previously held the tournament.

Portmarnock and Royal Dublin, which has undergone an extensive modernisation programme, would be strong candidates. Portmarnock last played host to the tournament in 2003.

Since then, it has moved to Baltray (2004), Carton House (2005 and 2006) and Adare Manor (2007 and 2008).
