Field events are being discriminated against in world athletics, says triple jump Olympic champion Jonathan Edwards. No surprise there. But yesterday's silver medallist in Lisbon, Edwards, could be at home in England today preparing for church tomorrow.
Edwards' indoors final was held yesterday, squeezed in between the heats of the 200 metres, almost four hours before the opening ceremony.
The timing, if he wishes, allowed him arrive Thursday night, to compete in a half-empty stadium yesterday morning and fly back to England sometime after lunch, before the championships had officially begun. Edwards was also the only triple jumper in the 12-man field to have achieved the qualification mark of 17.60 metres.
