Cork plays host this afternoon to a transferred Punchestown card that includes two graded races. Just Little, as brave as she is small, can profit from a 15lbs allowance from top weight Cockney Lad to win the Morgiana Hurdle, the richest hurdle in Ireland this weekend.
A pointer to his high regard for her was the decision of Charlie Swan on the day to take a helicopter trip back from Galway to Leopardstown to ride Just Little in the Gas Network News Handicap Hurdle. Under top weight of 11-10, she only managed fifth place to Grimes, but she ran a typically honest race.
Cockney Lad, now on his highest ever rating, upset Theatreworld by nine lengths over 2m 4f at Navan and surprised me by getting the trip so well. In a true run event, he is better at 2m and will be sure to test out Just Little.
Buddy Marvel, who reached Listed class on the flat, impressed on his hurdles debut at Fairyhouse when he was coasting just behind the leaders until making his effort turning for home.
He then quickly put the issue out of doubt to beat En-Jay-Bee. John McLoughlin said afterwards that he had only been schooled for the first time after coming from Back England where he ran at Newbury in last October. It is early days to talk about the Triumph Hurdle, but he is certainly a possible at the moment.
A Sunday double could be on the cards at Navan for those who "go" for it with Go Roger Go again beating Promalee, this time in the "Monksfield" Novices Hurdle while the weekend nap is Go Now in the Beechmount Handicap Hurdle at Navan.
On paper, Promalee - 4lbs better off for a beating of one and a half lengths by Go Roger Go at Tipperary - should be capable of turning things around but Go Roger Go is an improver who won again since beating another favourite Aboriginal at Navan.
Go Now let down a gamble in the Brown Lad Handicap Hurdle at Naas last Saturday when only sixth behind Afarka. I believe that he may have found the trip too short. The distance was only 2m 4f whereas over today's trip of 3m, he had looked much comfortable in winning the Golden Vale Maverick Handicap Hurdle at Listowel in September.
Heist is not every punter's favourite chaser but he runs many a good race and in last year's Troytown Chase at Navan, he looked a winner at one stage. This was after he struck the front at the second last but he could not find the necessary reserves to peg back Lord Singapore. On his latest run at Galway he was again placed to the same horse, so at least he is retaining his form and in a decimated handicap, with the weights lifting 25lbs after the defection of Imperial Call, he can improve on last year's performance.
Michael O'Brien has not lost faith in Hamamelis after two seconds over hurdles and she may pick up the winning thread in the Tara Maiden Hurdle. At least there is no Rainbow Frontier in this field, as she went down to him at Roscommon and then again at Listowel.
