Juventus had Dutch goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar sent off but held on to beat Inter Milan 1-0 with a goal from Filippo Inzaghi at the Delle Alpi yesterday and remain level on points with Lazio at the top of Serie A.
Both sides have 28 points from 13 matches but Lazio, who dispatched Fiorentina 2-0 at the Olympic stadium earlier, lead Juve on goal difference.
Inzaghi scored the only goal in the 19th minute for Juventus after a moment of class from Alessandro Del Piero, who was then substituted in the 61st minute after Van Der Sar was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Lazio's win over Fiorentina gave them just the break they needed after a difficult period following their 4-1 drubbing by Roma in last month's derby.
Alen Boksic fired home a nearpost shot in the 15th minute and a Yugoslav one-two provided the knockout blow with Sinisa Mihajlovic crossing to the far post and Dejan Stankovic nodding home in the 71st minute.
Lazio fans were chanting the name of one their former heroes, Giuseppe Signori, during the first half after the Bologna striker found the target against rivals Roma.
Bologna's winner came in the 25th minute lead when Swede Kennet Andersson nodded on Massimo Tarantino's throw-in and Signori smacked a volley just beneath the crossbar.
In Spain, Deportivo La Coruna kept up their charge towards a first Spanish league title yesterday with a 1-0 win at Real Sociedad to open up a five-point lead over Galician neighbours Celta Vigo, who had to settle for a 1-1 home draw with Athletic Bilbao.
Deportivo needed a Jose Felix Guerrero own goal seven minutes before the break to snatch the points as they struggled to see off a spirited Sociedad in San Sebastian but it was the kind of battling showing of which real title challenges are made.
Certainly the Galicians showed they were made of sterner stuff on the day than fading Barcelona, whose hopes of a third straight championship win took a knock on Saturday when they slid to a 3-2 defeat at tailenders Seville.
Barca are now 10 points adrift of top spot with 23 points from 15 matches.
