RACING York preview: Karen's Caper can turn around the 1,000 Guineas form and stake her claim to be the best of the Classic crop with victory in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot at York today.
With a line-up that includes the Guineas winner Virginia Waters and top juvenile Damson, Karen's Caper will not have an easy task, but she looks a really progressive filly.
Trainer John Gosden took his time with the daughter of War Chant, and she wasn't seen on the course until October, when she had two runs on the all-weather.
Karen's Caper showed she was better than usually seen on the Lingfield sand when she went on to win the Nell Gwyn Stakes on her seasonal debut.
She was not disgraced when fourth in the Guineas subsequently. Her wide draw at Newmarket meant she saw far too much daylight, and she burned a lot of her energy early on before just fading out of it in the final furlong.
Karen's Caper has been drawn one today, which should give Jimmy Fortune the chance to settle her in, and she can land a first Group One win.
Mountain High can make the leap from maiden company to Group class in the King Edward VII Stakes.
Michael Stoute's colt created a favourable impression when third to Fashionable at Newmarket in April, and he built on that with a convincing success at Chester last time.
Although the form probably does not amount to much, Mountain High was eased down to beat High Arctic by five lengths in the Roodee 10-furlong contest.
Since he is out of a Ribblesdale and Yorkshire Oaks winner, there is every reason to believe Mountain High will get the extra two furlongs.
Dermot Weld's Helvetio could take some beating in the Group Three Queen's Vase.
The Theatrical colt scored over 10 furlongs last time after just being touched off the previous time, and although this will be a big step up in trip, Weld is a shrewd operator.
Rumplestiltskin can make it three from three in the opening Albany Stakes over six furlongs.
The Danehill filly opened her account at Naas in May before Aidan O'Brien moved her up to Listed level at the same track, where she managed to win again despite running green.
Rumplestiltskin will have learned a bit more from her second run and she should oblige.
Courageous Duke can gain adequate compensation for an unlucky run last time out in the Wolferton Handicap at Newmarket.
Given that was also his seasonal bow, Courageous Duke should be much better placed for success on the Knavesmire.
