SCHOOLS' RUGBY: Newpark Comprehensive 11 St. Columba's College 10 /  St. Patrick's Navan 17 CBS Naas 9 CENTRE JAMES Kelly held his nerve to kick Newpark Comprehensive to the Leinster Schools' (Section A) McMullen Senior Cup for the second time in three years at Donnybrook yesterday.

St Columba's recovered from a Kelly penalty in the sixth minute to be catapulted to the lead by a try from their hard-running centre Crispin Maenpaa, with his outhalf Paddy Owens kicking the conversion.

Owens added a penalty in the 29th minute for a 10-3 advantage at the break.

Given the relative strengths of the defences, it was a long way back from there for Newpark.

It took multiple phases before Mulcaire O'Meara sent wing Eoin Black into the corner.

It put the winners within two points, and Kelly shot the clincher from 40 metres with a little help from the upright.

ST PATRICK'S Classical School centre Chris Oginni emerged as the hero of the hour with the decisive try to kill off two-time winners CBS Naas in the Leinster Schools (Section A) Junior Cup final at Donnybrook yesterday.

It looked ominous for the defending champions when Naas captain Ryan Casey kicked his third penalty to make it 9-7 just 11 minutes from time to overtake a converted first-half try from Liam Bourke.

However, Oginni, who had been excellent in defence, charged down fullback Cian O'Brien's clearance to race over at the posts in what was a real body blow to Naas.

Outhalf Bourke sealed the deal with a whopping, 40-metre penalty to put more than one score between two evenly matched schools.
