MUNSTER COLLEGES' SF CHAMPIONSHIP:COLÁISTE CHRÍOST RÍ, Tralee CBS and the Intermediate School Killorglin advanced to the quarter-finals of the Corn Uí Mhuirí (Munster Colleges Senior Football Championship) in contrasting styles yesterday.

Coláiste Chríost Rí needed a strong finish to overcome St Fachtna’s, Skibbereen, by 1-14 to 1-10 at Cloughduv, having been a point down with six minutes left in a must-win game.

A well-taken goal by substitute Ciarán Dalton moments later settled the Cork side, who finished with a point from a 45 from county minor Luke Connolly.

Tralee CBS needed no such heroics against St Colman’s, Fermoy, romping to a 3-17 to 1-4 win in Knocknagree, where Shane O’Callaghan (2) and Jamie Moriarty claimed goals.

The Kerry school had the game wrapped up at half-time, when they led by 2-11 to 0-0.

A powerful second-half display paved the way for Killorglin to record a 1-10 to 1-7 win over West Clare Colleges. Killorglin had the opening point after 10 minutes, at Croagh, but they were rocked by a magnificently-struck goal by Jack Scanlon from a delivery by Jim Downes.

Only a point separated them, 1-4 to 1-3, in favour of Killorglin at half-time, with Gary O’Sullivan getting the Kerry goal.

On the resumption the Kerry side launched seven attacks in as many minutes but failed to add to their score until Timmy Walsh pointed after 10 minutes.

Gavin Nolan was top scorer for Killorglin with five points, four from frees, and he and Gary O’Sullivan posed a major threat to the Clare defence, whose goalkeeper Kevin Pender made one superb save. With 12 minutes remaining Killorglin were still only a point in front.
