Kimble cuts to the chase

Alan Kimble inspired Wimbledon to a hard-fought extra time win over Huddersfield in a thrilling tie at the McAlpine Stadium.

Kimble cancelled out Scott Sellars' first-half opener for the home side with a sensational free-kick and then created his side's extra-time winner which was headed in by Jason Euell.

First Division Huddersfield had numerous chances in normal and extra-time but Wimbledon goalkeeper Neil Sullivan produced stunning saves from Dean Gorre, Craig Armstrong, Sellars, Clyde Wijnhard and Marcus Stewart.

Amazingly, in such a high octane and dramatic cup tie, referee Jeff Winter did not produce a yellow card. But he was subjected to abuse from the home crowd when he turned down a 90th-minute penalty appeal after Wijnhard had appeared to be bundled over in the box by Dean Blackwell.

Huddersfield deservedly took the lead after 40 minutes, just moments after Gorre's overhead kick was kept out by Sullivan. The Scottish international goalkeeper could do nothing to prevent substitute Sellars, who had only been on the field seven minutes after replacing Chris Beech, sweeping home Ben Thornley's free-kick from close range.

Wimbledon's equaliser came on the hour when Gayle tangled with Jon Dyson and referee Winter awarded a free-kick which Kimble blasted straight into the top left-hand corner from 25 yards out.

In extra-time, the pace of the game did not falter but it was Wimbledon who made the breakthrough when the impressive Kimble delivered a measured cross which Euell flicked into the far corner.
