News: Barry King and Morgan Dunne produced their very own tales of the unexpected in the all-Dublin semi-finals in the Danone Irish Junior Open championships when surprising ITF-ranked competitors at Fitzwilliam yesterday.
King, from Rathfarnham, rebuffed the challenge of James McGee, while Dunne dismantled the game that had earned Tristan Farron-Mahon a respectable 200th place on the ITF world rankings.
Normally, third seed King upsetting the second seed, McGee, would be no big deal, but the latter's two ITF junior ranking tournament victories this summer makes King's victory worthy of note.
King got the vital first-set break in the seventh game and despite leading 4-1 in the second (one break) he was pegged back before winning a tense tie-break 7-5 for a 6-4, 7-6 success in 90 minutes.
In the second semi-final, it seemed as though Farron-Mahon's service game was going to be the deciding factor as he dropped only three points on his serve in the first set.
But Dunne stepped up his game and dropped only five games in taking the second and final sets in a comprehensive win.
