Lancastrian Pride made it two wins from as many starts over fences in the featured Saggart Novice Chase at Naas on Saturday. However, the Willie Mullins-trained gelding paid the ultimate penalty for his efforts, suffering a massive internal haemorrhage in the stabling area soon afterwards.
Tom Treacy gave the eight-year-old a patient ride, challenging the front-running Eton Gale approaching the last, and staying on well on the run-in to score by three and a half lengths. But the son of Lancastrian showed signs of distress in the unsaddling enclosure, and collapsed soon afterwards.
Conor O'Dwyer and Arthur Moore combined for a 54 to 1 double in the other two chases on the card with Moore's Melodies and Over Eager. The whole complexion of the Kill Handicap Chase changed four out where the two principals in the market, Slaney Fayre and Pinkpinkfizz, both blundered and unseated their riders. This left Moore's Melodies with a clear advantage, and the Orchestra gelding kept on dourly to hold Hersilia by four lengths.
O'Dwyer notched up his half century for the season aboard Over Eager in the Leinster Beginners Chase. The six-year-old son of Over The River, a dual point-to-point winner last year and carrying the colours of J P McManus, travelled well to lead at the last, and had little difficulty beating Pokono Trail by three lengths.
Patriot Games, who along with Darapour is the only Triumph Hurdle from the Aidan O'Brien stable, opened his account over timber at the third time of asking in the Bishopscourt Maiden Hurdle. Charlie Swan kept the Polish Patriot colt up to his work from the last to beat Tonita's Choice by three lengths.
Richard Dunwoody is to desert leading chaser One Man at the Cheltenham Festival. The former champion jockey today revealed that he will instead partner Klairon Davis in the Queen Mother Champion Chase.
Dunwoody has partnered One Man to his two victories in the King George VI Chase. His decision means that Tony Dobbin will be reunited with the grey who he guided to victory in the 1994 Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Newbury.
Dunwoody is giving up on One Man because he wants to honour an agreement with Klairon Davis's trainer Arthur Mooore.
"I'm riding Klairon Davis in the Queen Mother Champion Chase. I gave Mr Moore my word at the start of the season that I would ride him," he said. "It's the same situation as last year when I gave the commitment to ride One Man and rode him in preference to Sound Man."
