Andre Fabre rewrote the record booksas Sagamix gave the Chantilly trainer an unequalled fifth victory in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp yesterday.
The win, narrowly denying John Dunlop's Prix Vermeille winner Leggera, also provided Olivier Peslier with a hat-trick of successes in the race.
Sagamix's victory also proved a vindication for his jockey, who took the berth on the unbeaten grey's back in preference to Epsom Derby winner High-Rise, who found plenty of traffic problems. Richard Quinn committed Leggera to the front with about a furlong and a half still to race, and the combination held the lead until the final 50 yards when Sagamix arrived on her outside to win by a neck. Three-quarters of a length back in third came Tiger Hill.
High-Rise's rider Michael Kinane told trainer Luca Cumani a tale of frustration. "He said early on the position wasn't ideal, and in the straight he didn't get many gaps," said Cumani. "When the gaps came it was too late, and it was a sprint because they hadn't gone fast enough.
"If you look at it he is still on the bridle a furlong out with nowhere to go. If you don't have the room to run, you can't show how fast you can run."
The Aidan O'Brien pair, Crystal Downs and Pink Coral, were second and fourth respectively in the Group One Prix Marcel Boussac (1m) won by Juvenia. However, O'Brien's Bianconi was disappointing 10th in the Prix de l'Abbaye.
