Late call-up strikes early

Cork City completed their home league programme in sparkling mood yesterday with a crushing win over Bohemians

Cork City completed their home league programme in sparkling mood yesterday with a crushing win over Bohemians. The win ensured that Cork will be involved in European competition again at the start of next season.

They took inspiration from a goal from Johnny Glynn after just five minutes from play. Glynn had only been brought into the team when first-choice centre forward Noel Hartigan suffered an injury in the before-match kick-about.

The goal stemmed from an outstanding run on the left wing by Ollie Cahill that took him past five Bohemians players as he ran from one penalty area to the other. When he turned the ball back for Gareth Cronin to cross Jason Kabia deflected the ball into the path of Glynn, who struck a powerful shot from 20 yards.

Cork's pressure produced a second goal after 29 minutes. A cross from the right wing by John Caulfield was speeding into the penalty area when it was deflected by Maurice O'Driscoll into his own net.

Cork lost their sparkle in the second half but an off-colour Bohemians failed to capitalise. They created only one scoring opportunity when substitute John Ryan had a shot turned away by goalkeeper Noel Mooney after 83 minutes.
