Norwegian minnows Rosenborg Trondheim missed out on a place in the Champions' League quarter-finals at the expense of Juventus by just two minutes as Olympiakos claimed a 2-2 draw in Athens.

Rosenborg were on the way through to the last eight for the second successive season until Predrag Djordjevic scored a last-gasp equaliser for their Greek opponents.

This left Juventus to claim one of the two qualifying places for group runners-up as a result of Filippo Inzaghi's 83rd-minute winner in their 1-0 win over Manchester United.

"I didn't realise we had qualified until I saw my team-mates jumping up and down on the sideline," said Inzaghi. "This is definitely the most important goal of my career."

Also through by finishing second in their section are Bayer Leverkusen from Group F and they join holders Borussia Dortmund, who won Group A, and Group E winners Bayern Munich to give Germany three sides in the quarter-finals.

Real Madrid and Monaco claimed the remaining two places still to be decided, with Group C winners Dinamo Kiev, who lost 2-0 at Newcastle last night, having already secured their place.

Madrid overwhelmed Porto 4-0 to clinch top spot in Group D, two goals by Davor Suker helping them to a comfortable victory.

Monaco and Leverkusen knew that a draw would send both sides through, but it was looking shaky for the French champions as they trailed 2-0 after an hour.

However, goals from Christophe Pignol and then Thierry Henry nine minutes from time made it 2-2 and clinched Monaco's progress from Group F.

It was a disappointing night for Paris St Germain, who beat Besiktas of Turkey 2-1 and for a while were in the frame for the last eight.

Even PSV Eindhoven, who eventually drew 2-2 at home to Barcelona, were in the running as they led the Spaniards midway through the second half, only for events elsewhere to spoil their night.

Dortmund cruised to a 3-0 win at Sparta Prague, Scotland's Scott Booth being among the scorers, but Bayern lost 1-0 at home to Gothenburg, thanks to a sloppy own goal.

Everything that could go wrong for Bayern did. Defensive bulwark Thomas Helmer withdrew after 20 minutes with a knee injury and may not play again this year. Then in the 51st minute, Markus Babbel passed the ball slowly back to goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, who took his eye off the ball and watched the ball crawl over the line for Gothenburg's winning goal.
