The repeated interest in Kieron Dyer suggests that O'Leary has a good deal of money available, but the Dubliner again indicated that he is prepared to wait for the right players to come along as he looks to further strengthen an already fine squad.

They may have missed out on this season's Champions League but to have done so well in last year's competition was a remarkable achievement given all that was going on at the club.

As it stands, though, there is a retrial to face up to for Lee Bowyer and Jonathon Woodgate in a few months.

That aside the squad could do with a bit of strengthening, not least on the right side of midfield, but a fit Stephen McPhail would certainly be a major bonus.

All the rest of us would need then is for the manager and chairman to stop going on about how devoted they are to each other every other day.
