Leen pickings as English schools are dominant

Eoin Leen has become the biggest performer - literally - in Irish schools competition this summer. On Saturday in Tullamore, he underlined his potential with another throws title at the 33rd edition of the four nations Schools International.

As Irish team captain, the Tralee giant was soon inspiring his team with a win in the shot put. His 18.33 metres effort left him almost two metres clear of England's Peter Cranfield (16.43) but elsewhere, the English teams dominated.

Irish girls' captain Rachel Akers in the hammer was one of only two other individual wins - and she needed a record distance to do it. Representing Scarrif in Clare, Akers threw 49.70 metres in the third round, enough to see off Scotland's Frances Miller.

The boy's 4x100 metre relay provided an exciting conclusion. Exactly 10 years after they won it for the first time, the Irish team pulled off the victory in 42.56 seconds, to edge out Scotland for second place.
