Golf lost one its favourite daughters last week with the death of Mary (O'Brien) Adams following a long illness. Mary joined the staff at Elm Park in 1944 and 12 years later was appointed secretary/manager of the club, a position she filled with distinction until she retired in 1986 - a truly lifetime of service to the club.
Mary was one of the founder members of the Association of Golf Club Secretaries and held the position of president in 1972. Through her work for the association and her high profile in Elm park, she was widely respected in Irish golfing circles and in 1982 she received the Evening Press Golf Personality of the Year award. Mary is survived by her husband, Stanley (the former secretary/ manager at Edmondstown), her brother Brian and step-son Nick.
