Limerick FC advanced to the next round when they overcame the challenge of Leinster Senior League side Glebe North at Market Green, Balbriggan, yesterday. This was a bruising second-round clash that kept the large attendance well entertained throughout.

Glebe started promisingly with Stephen Healy setting up fellow striker Damien Doyle for a shot which Limerick keeper Jimmy Fyfe had to save at full stretch.

But it was Limerick who took the lead after 18 minutes when midfielder Oran Weldrick's shot from outside the box was deflected back into the path of in-rushing striker Derek McCarthy, who drove in from 12 yards off the underside of the bar.

Four minutes before the break the hosts got their just reward: Doyle picked up in midfield and slotted a neat pass to Chris Costello on the right wing. Costello sent in a low curling cross to fellow midfielder Rory Kerr, who was unmarked, and he scored from seven yards.

The winner fell to Limerick, however, in the 78th minute when Brendan Hughes gained possession in midfield and passed to substitute defender John Whyte who struck a low, hard shot from the edge of the box to the bottom left corner of the net.
