UL 2-20 UCC 1-13: UL WERE emphatic victors in Limerick yesterday as they gained revenge for last year's final defeat.
The home team were spearheaded by strong defensive showings from Kieran Joyce and Seamus Hickey, and attacking trio Willie Ryan, Brian Carroll and Ryan O’Dwyer.
Ryan was top-scorer with 1-9, his seventh-minute goal helping UL to an early 1-3 to 0-2 lead.
They maintained that supremacy to lead 1-8 to 0-6 in the 27th minute. But points by Luke O’Farrell and Stephen Moylan kept UCC in touch at the break.
UCC began the second half brightly but were rocked by a second UL goal in the 40th minute from Offaly star Shane Dooley. UCC rallied when Stephen Moylan found the net six minutes later to narrow the gap to 2-14 to 1-12.
But UL closed in strong fashion with a string of points from Ryan, O’Dwyer and Carroll leaving them with 10 to spare at the finish.
