SOCCER: AIRTRICITY LEAGUE:LIMERICK HAVE confirmed the signings of former Cork City stars Denis Behan and Joe Gamble with the pair returning to play in Ireland after playing most recently with League One outfit Hartlepool United.
The pair will add considerable quality to Pat Scully’s squad as it pushes for promotion from its current position of fourth in the First Division table, seven points behind leaders Shelbourne.
They were unveiled last night by club chairman Pat O’Sullivan who also announced details of the refurbishment of the Markets Field which is to be completed ahead of the club’s return there in 2012 and a number of community based initiatives.
Meanwhile, League of Ireland referee’s assistant Damien MacGraith has been appointed as one of the officials to oversee Saturday’s European under-21 Championship final between Spain and Switzerland in Aarhus.
MacGraith, a secondary school teacher from Mayo, will serve as as one of Italian referee Paulo Tagliavento’s two assistants. He has previously been involved with a number of European club matches and senior internationals.
* IRISH Cup holders Peamount have been drawn against Rayo Vallecano of Madrid, ZNK Krka from Slovenia and Estonia’s Parnu in the group qualifying stages of the women’s Champions League.
Peamount’s group, one of eight intended to produce winners and two best runners up to join the 22 seeded teams for the knockout stages of the competition, will take place over six days in mid August in Slovenia.
French side Lyon won last season’s competition.
