Women's Football/Australasia 2-13 London 1-3: An outstanding Australasia team easily saw off the challenge of London in the final of the women's football International tournament played at Portmarnock yesterday.
Australasia led by 1-8 to 0-2 at half-time, despite playing into a strong breeze, with Sally Cooper scoring the goal. Mel Cowie added the second from the penalty spot, with London's Joanne Deward scoring a consolation goal.
The Australasian team are made up almost exclusively of non-Irish players, many of whom play Aussie Rules and soccer, but have also taken up Gaelic football. In the Shield final, Canada beat Britain by 4-18 to 3-8.
Meanwhile, Bernie Farrelly of Kildare will captain the Irish camogie side who travel to Scotland on Friday for the Camogie/Shinty Compromise Tournament. A panel of 20 Irish camogie players, selected from junior counties, will compete in Inverness.
