National League/UCD 0; Longford Town 3: Doomsday is not far off now. UCD suffered their 11th league defeat of the season after another tame performance at Belfield Park last night.
When propping up the table dropping the points at home is simply not an option.
Grit and determination were notably absent until they were trailing by two goals, from Darragh Sheridan and the impressive Shane Barrett.
The third goal was late arriving, but it was certainly worth waiting for, as replacement Seán Francis struck a marvellous volley into the back of the net from an Alan Kirby cross.
Longford muscled their hosts off the ball from early on and striker Barrett could have scored a hatful from the plentiful service he was receiving. Just after the half-hour mark he turned supplier for Sheridan who fired past Austin O'Neill.
Barrett threatened to open his account for the evening moments later when a nervous O'Neill failed to gather a through ball but the striker's shot hit the post from a tight angle.
The students should have drawn level soon after but Robbie Griffin made a hash of a one-on-one with goalkeeper Stephen O'Brien.
The sparse crowd only had to wait until the second minute of the new half for the second goal, when Barrett found himself with time and space to slot home from three yards.
Fit again captain Tony McDonnell was thrown into the fray for UCD and he was lucky not to concede a late penalty after a last-gasp tackle on Barrett.
