There was a major upset in the final of the Clare senior football championship yesterday when hot favourites Doonbeg were decisively beaten by Cooraclare in Glann Ciosog.
It was Cooraclare's midfield of Michael Corry and Joe Considine, with assistance from centre forward Tom Morrissey - who had returned from the US five weeks ago - that laid the foundations for the success and a goal midway through the first half by Martin Morrissey helped them to a halftime lead of 1-3 to 0-4.
The pass came from mid-field and gave Morrissey an opportunity to pick his spot with the Doonbeg defences at sixes and sevens. It was a measure of the tight marking by Cooraclare that none of the Doonbeg six forwards who started the game with Doonbeg figured on the scoresheet.
They quickly stretched their advantage when Christy O'Donoghue kicked an excellent point at the start of the second half.
The accurate boot of Gerry Killeen kept Doonbeg's hopes alive, but he and Francis McInerney must have been bitterly disappointed as they squandered opportunities close to the end.
