The summer spending spree didn't quite go to plan but, as ever, Alex Ferguson took the disappointments with good grace. Despite the failure to capture either Celio Silva or Nadal, however, United once again look to be the most rounded package overall.
Their pursuit of the Champions' League could impact again on their title chase at home but otherwise the continued development of younger players like David Beckham (pictured) and Nicky Butt, the emergence of some of last year's signings from a summer's rest and Ferguson's ability to adapt tactically to a given situation, all point to them being the team to beat once more.
