Gareth Maybin (Ballyclare) who was a member of the Ireland team which retained the Cardigan Cup in the Youths International with Wales last Friday and won the Carmarthenshire Open at Ashburnham on Saturday, came close to completing the treble on Sunday. Rounds of 74 and 69 left him joint second in the Trubshaw Cup at Tenby golf club with Kyron Sullivan (Wales), behind Walker Cup squad member Nigel Edwards. Edwards closed with two rounds of 69 for a total of 288 - just one shot ahead of Maybin.
