SIGERSON CUP QUARTER FINALS: NUI Maynooth 2-12 UUJ 1-13NUI MAYNOOTH pulled off a major coup in yesterday's quarter-final by defeating hot-favourites UUJ, at Jordanstown.
After being over-run in the opening quarter, Maynooth got their act together and not even the dismissal of Dublin centre-back Ger Brennan in the 38th minute, on a second yellow card prevented them from dominating the game.
UUJ raced into a 0-5 to 0-0 lead after 11 minutes and should have cracked in two goals in that spell, as well, but a fortunate goal for Maynooth in the 21st minute changed the picture. A centre from the left was palmed out by UUJ goalkeeper Stephen Kane into the path of Na Fianna’s David Quinn, who netted.
Lucan’s David Quinn, from a free, added a point and the gap was down to 0-6 to 1-2 but UUJ regained control to lead by 0-9 to 1-3 at the interval.
Brennan’s sending off seemed to spur Maynooth and they controlled most of the second period. UUJ got a consolation goal deep into overtime from Caolan O’Boyle.
