Mayo took their fifth football All-Ireland title in the junior grade at Ennis on Saturday evening with a point in the final moments. Kerry looked the superior outfit for long periods, but an inability to convert possession into scores at one end, and a vulnerable defence at the other, allowed Mayo to stay in touch all the way.

That defence was opened for the first time just seconds into the game when Mayo full forward Tony Morley got through for a goal. Kerry slowly gained the initiative, however, and an Eamonn Fitzmaurice goal in the 24th minute put them in front for the first time. Mayo led at the break, however, 1-5 to 1-4, and good performances from midfielders John Hession and Kevin Comer kept them in the game as Kerry threatened to take control. Comer kicked the equalising point in the 55th minute, which paved the way for wing forward Ollie Walsh to kick the winning point from a free as the clock wound down.
