SWIMMING: Young Dublin swimmer Laura McDonnell broke the Irish junior record on her way to winning the 100m butterfly (16 years) the Irish Age Group Championships over the weekend in Limerick.
McDonnell also took home gold in the 100m and 200m breaststroke and the 200m and 400m IM, while also taking silver in the 200m butterfly.
The big success story of the weekend was 13-year-old Gráinne Murphy from New Ross who won 10 gold medals and was the outstanding swimmer of the meet. She is rated as one of Ireland's best hopes for international success and won golds in the 100m breaststroke, 200m IM, 400m freestyle, 200m butterfly, 100m backstroke, 200m freestyle, 400m IM, 100m freestyle, 200m breaststroke and 100m butterfly in the 13-year-old girls' group.
