Derry 1-14 UUJ 0-6:Derry boss Brian McIver was pleased to see a team containing five debutants comfortably see off UUJ at Celtic Park on Saturday night.

Teenager Ciarán McFaul was most impressive. Joint-captain of the minor side last season, McFaul came into the starting line-up in place of the injured Declan Mullan, scored 1-1 and displayed a superb range of passing. Thomas Mallon, Conor McAtamney, Philly Bradley and Danny Heavron also made solid bows in the red and white while Kevin Johnston came off the bench to make it six debuts on the night.

There were 21 Derry men on the field at the start of the night with six Oak Leaf players lining out in UUJ colours.

A positive night for McIver was completed when Gerard O’Kane made his return from injury as a second half sub.
