Armagh's former All-Ireland winning captain Kieran McGeeney has announced his retirement from intercounty football, ending a 17-year career than earned him a reputation as one of the most formidable players in the country.

"Geezer" McGeeney turns 36 next month and it further marks the end of an era for Armagh football, following the decision last month of manager Joe Kernan to retire.

Having joined the senior panel at age 18, McGeeney proved a stalwart for Armagh, his just reward coming in 2002 when Armagh finally won their first All-Ireland senior title, with McGeeney raising the Sam Maguire.

He also played on several International Rules teams for Ireland. It's understood he will continue to play club football for Na Fianna in Dublin.
