Missed penalties and chances tell a story

Fulham 1 Aston Villa 1: This was a game memorable only for misses

Fulham 1 Aston Villa 1: This was a game memorable only for misses. Three missed penalties and the most glaring error of the season as Fulham had a host of opportunities to take the lead before half-time. Tomasz Radzinski forced the first save from Thomas Sorensen with a drive from 25 yards, then the Dane clawed out Luis Boa Morte's shot. Radzinski then, in front of an unguarded net, saw his shot fly wide.

Radzinski's lack of control was exceeded by that of Lee Hendrie minutes after the break. Nolberto Solano drove in a cross that invited Hendrie to lunge at it. The midfielder's connection from four yards out was one of the misses of the season, flying yards over the bar. But Villa raised their game. Juan Pablo Angel met Hitzlsperger's cross with such power Lee Clark's attempt for a clearance came too late to prevent the goal.

Soon all Fulham's misses would be eclipsed by Andy Cole. Boa Morte won a disputed penalty after Olof Mellberg's challenge and the former Blackburn striker stepped up, only to scuff his shot wide. Cole was soon substituted but his failure to find the net was beaten by Angel, who would soon contrive a hat-trick of misses. A header that flashed a foot wide was bad luck, the two missed penalties, both saved by Van der Sar, were profligacy.

Villa would pay. Deep into injury time Clark popped up to unleash a half-volley that fizzed past Sorensen for the equaliser.
