Youth Olympics: On the second day of the European Youth Olympics in Esbjerg, Denmark, yesterday, Ciaran D'Arcy failed to move beyond the badminton quarter-final after losing 15-6 and 15-9 to Robert Blair of Britain, but earlier he partnered Lisa Lynas in the mixed doubles to reach the last eight.

In swimming, David O'Dowling missed the A final of the 400m freestyle by one place and finished seventh in the B final with a time of four minutes 17.88 seconds.

Elsewhere, Brian Ryan came through his first fight in the 73kg judo competition but he later fell to Luis Antennes of Portugal.

Barry Meade was 43rd in the cycling criterium and the girls gymnastics team did well to finish 11th in their discipline.

Athletics: AN Irish under-19 team, including three athletes from St Malachy's in Belfast, will travel to Riga, Latvia, for the European Junior Championships from August 5th-8th.

Francis McCaffrey and Colin McLean, both from St Malachy's, run in the 800 metres, with McClean doubling up for the 1,500 metres alongside his schoolmate Conor Sweeney. In the javelin Michael Allen of Ballymena completes an all-Ulster male team. Of the girls, Kilkenny's Emily Maher competes in the 100 metres with the promising Ciara Sheehy from West Dublin entered in the 200 metres.
