FAI Cup, Second round/ Monaghan United 1 Dundalk 7: Monaghan United suffered humiliation in their second-round FAI Carlsberg Cup game at Century Homes Park when two second-half sendings off turned what was initially a close contest into little more than target practice for visitors Dundalk.
Philip Hughes volleyed Monaghan ahead in the 27th minute but Dundalk equalised two minutes later when Alan Murphy turned home David Hoey's free kick from close range.
Two minutes into the second half Monaghan midfielder Jimmy Fullam was shown the red card after appearing to stamp on Dundalk striker Ger McCarthy.
Then an off-the-ball incident involving McCarthy and Monaghan defender Graham Doyle resulted in Doyle being sent off.
Mickey O'Kane put Dundalk in front in the 60th minute and two McCarthy goals in quick succession effectively ended the match as a contest.
Peter Hynes headed Dundalk's fifth goal in the 80th minute. Colin Finnan, making his Dundalk debut, made it 6-1 and McCarthy completed his hat-trick in the final minute.
